The Problem

A Growing Concern for Higher Education

College Evolution (CE) provides support for students needing a little assistance in the challenging new world of university life.  With recent trends in online networks, American higher-education now provides connection for academic content and mentoring, but across the country, freshman classes have diminishing retention rates. In 2009 research into America’s colleges and Universities found that more than ⅓ of freshman do not return for their sophomore year.  Further, only HALF of all undergraduates complete a college degree and those who do complete college take six years on average to graduate. Currently the U.S. ranks 9th in the world in college attainment.

Key Factors

Several recent studies have come to the same conclusion regarding the reasons for dropping out, and it has little or nothing to do with intelligence or comprehension of subject matter.  In 2016, Fortune Magazine published an article titled, The Real Reasons College Students Drop Out which found that two strong predictors of attrition were the financial needs of the student but to a far greater degree were the problems associated with social isolation.

With recent trends in online networking students spend more time alone. Those students with emotional and academic challenges struggle to overcome hurdles and quickly become overwhelmed trying to manage these issues on their own.  In addition,

  • Depression rates have more than doubled since 1995.
  • Currently, one-third of Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder.
  • In 2016, 21.5 million Americans reported battling a substance addiction.
  • In the U.S., 70 percent of adults have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives, which consistently causes disruptions in life.
  • From 1985 to 2015, the rate of learning disabilities doubled. I
  • n 1999, autism rates averaged 1 in 500. In 2014, the average increased to 1 in 68.
